Recently, I found myself listening to wbur, whilst driving. As typical with the arrival of a new year, the topic of commitments arose. Specifically, the book by Ann Patchett; 'My Year Of No Shopping' was discussed.
Imagine, one year without shopping! Ann is specifically targeting abstaining from purchasing new shoes, clothes, purses or jewelry. Not an easy feat in our consumer driven culture! Trust me, I love shoes just as much as the next woman! Nonetheless, I found the subject to be very relevant to the new year when we are perhaps recovering from credit card bills. Not to mention the temptations pushed on us by 'buy it now' or 'best sale ever' or 'last chance' tactics. In this environment, its no doubt that the line can become blurry between 'need' and 'want.' Needless to say this book gave me something to reflect on and so I chose to pass this on to my fellow striving minimalists.
